County schools get confirmed new funding deal

16th September 2017

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin today celebrated a huge win for county schools after the Department for Education announced details of a new fairer funding deal for county schools.

The MP has campaigned for a fairer deal since she was first elected as an MP in 2010 and has lobbied a succession of Government Ministers to secure a better funding arrangement for local schools.

Historically, Worcestershire has been one of the worst funded areas in the country and Harriett has worked with local teachers to make the case for redressing this imbalance.

Education Secretary Justine Greening this week announced details on the new deal which will see £1.3 billion extra allocated to schools next year, the introduction of a minimum funding level with a cash increase for every school.

Under the new deal, each secondary school pupil will attract minimum funding of £4,800 and primary school pupils will attract at least £3,500. The changes will come into force next academic year.

In the statement, the Secretary of State also announced that an extra £26 million allocated to help very rural schools. Schools in West Worcestershire will be 3.2 per cent better off following the new funding formula introduction.

Harriett commented: “This is enormously good news for local teachers and parents and it is great to deliver on one of my key election pledges.

“We all know that local schools do a great job with really challenging funding and nine out of ten local secondary schools are either good or outstanding.

“The Government has consulted across the board to try and get the best possible deal for all schools and bring much more fairness into the funding system.

“Securing fairer funding has been one of my top priorities and I am delighted to be able to finally say that this manifesto pledge has now been delivered.

“I intend to discuss this with local head teachers and we all hope this deal will help to offer an even better education for our local pupils.”
