Highways England threatens year more of M5 delays

3rd April 2018

Junction improvements will cause another year of commuter delays according to plans being drawn up by Highways England.

And West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has written to the agency’s chief executive asking him to re-think the plan before it is imposed on local commuters.

Improvements to the motorway junction and surrounding roads at junction 6 of the M5 will mean major disruption and delay as the roads are widened and re-surfaced.

But because of the work above the motorway, the M5 will also have a speed restriction in place for a whole year adding yet more delays to road users.

This decision follows on from the artificial delays forced onto county drivers with the lane reductions on the M5 at junction 4A and the two year delay caused by the construction of the smart motorway stretch towards Birmingham.

Harriett commented: “Highways England is not being driver-friendly or joined-up about their work.

“I do understand that junction 6 needs improvements but these sweeping plans are making things worse and I have written to Highways England’s chief executive to seek a rethink and an urgent meeting.

“I get the impression that the agency responsible for our major roads no longer listens to councillors or Members of Parliament who represent the taxpayers paying for all this uncoordinated and sometimes downright obstructive work.”
