MP Harriett backs statue appeal for PM namesake

21st September 2017

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has offered her support for a fund-raising campaign to erect a statue to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

And Harriett attended a service at Worcestershire Cathedral to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Stanley Baldwin, who was born in Bewdley and represented the area as a Member of Parliament. The appeal is looking to raise £150,000 to erect a life-size bronze statue in Bewdley the county.

Harriett, who is unrelated to the former PM, offered her support to the campaign. She commented: "Stanley Baldwin is a towering figure in the Conservative party and rose from local parish councillor to become Prime Minister.

"I was honoured to be asked to read a lesson at the service to mark his birthday and help to support this campaign to mark his life and achievements - which include giving women the same rights to vote as men at the then age of 21.

"Although unrelated to the former county MP, I am delighted to also be serving in a Conservative Government and I often think of him when I stand at the same dispatch box that he did nearly 100 years ago."
