MP welcomes better rights for new home buyers

29th January 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has today welcomed Government plans to improve rights for people buying new homes.

The proposals will see the introduction of a New Homes Ombudsman to help people get quicker action when they have a problem with their newly-built home. The plans also see action to make the housing market fairer for tenant and leaseholders.

Housing Secretary this week wrote to Harriett outlining his plans to introduce legislation to create the Ombudsman and a code of practice for the housing sector following a consultation last year.

Harrriett commented: “I am regularly contacted by constituents who have problems with their new home and anyone who lives in Pershore or Malvern Vale will know the frustrations of having to wait for a housing developer to fulfill their obligations to the community.

“Only last week I had to write to the chief executive of Persimmon Homes about issues which have been outstanding for over four years in Malvern Vale. I hope that this new legislation gives local people and local authorities the power to get outstanding issues fixed swiftly.

“We all accept the need to deliver new housing but this must go hand-in-hand with a commitment from developers to keep to their promises on infrastructure and local community investment.

“I look forward to seeing further detail on the New Homes Ombudsman and hope that this will offer local people a swift easy solution to their concerns.”
