MP welcomes teenage ticket to ride

3rd January 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed a brand new railcard which will halve all rail fares for 16 and 17-year-olds.

The railcard will give 16-17 year olds 50 per cent off all fares from September including season tickets and peak services, and will provide a real boost for young people and their parents - with many saving thousands a year.

Alongside this news confirmed this week by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, the Government is also launching an industry led 26-30 year olds railcard helping younger commuters to reduce their rail fares by up to a third.

The Department for Transport is also launching a review to transform Britain’s railways, improve services and provide better value for money for passengers.

Harriett commented: “This news will be a boost for local students who have to commute into Worcester or Birmingham to study at peak times.

“Travel costs can be a significant burden for local families and this will help students and younger people who travel regularly by train to school, college or work.

“I regularly meet with the local franchise holders to encourage them to improve capacity and performance for local rail users and this announcement is an important intervention by the Government to help make rail travel more affordable for younger people.”
