Rail company pledges to find compromise for station café

20th February 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has called on a train company to find a workable solution to prevent the closure of Lady Foley’s Tea Room at Great Malvern Station.

The MP has written to West Midlands Trains managing director Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde asking him to intervene on the dispute which threatens the future of the popular café.

The train operating company, which took over the franchise just over a year ago, has been conducting a review of its station assets and has threatened a major rent increase, putting the tea room at risk of closure.

Several constituents have contacted Harriett to raise the matter and this week, West Midland Trains has confirmed that it is trying to find a workable solution to the issue.
Harriett commented: “Lady Foley’s Tea Room is much-loved by local people and visitors alike, and it continues to play an important role for people travelling to and from the town.

“I was surprised to see the details of the dramatic rent hike which was proposed by West Midlands Trains and I have urged the managing director to try and find a compromise which will not threaten the business.

“I am grateful for the confirmation that the franchise holder is looking to find a compromise and I look forward to hearing an update on these discussions very soon.”
