DEFRA opens Dairy Farmers’ Support Fund

3rd June 2020

Dairy Farmers will be able access an emergency fund next month to help replace income lost during the coronavirus crisis.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has unveiled a scheme worth up to £10,000 to support farmers who have suffered from a significant decline in milk prices and falling demand.

Some dairy farmers sell their milk only to hospitality businesses like hotels restaurants and coffee shops and these buyers have stopped with the outlets temporarily shut down.

The scheme, which is being managed by the Rural Payments Agency, will mean farmers can get a one-off payment next month.

Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, commented: “The Government has moved swiftly, developing a wide range of schemes to help businesses and protect jobs.

“Our dairy farmers do a highly valued job feeding the nation and this sudden decline has had a huge impact on their business.

“I’m encouraging farmers to visit the Government’s website to see what help is available and am happy to help any business which needs advice or support.

“I’ve always urged people to shop local and buy locally-sourced and grown produce and this could not be a better time to show support for our local food heroes.”
