Harriett praises government’s grassroots sport relief

19th November 2020

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed a £300 million fund which will help sport teams of all sizes to survive through the global pandemic.

The fund, which will help larger sports clubs cope with losses in revenues and also to help grass roots sports organisations and leisure centres to stay afloat during extended periods of shutdown this year.

The fund will be managed by the national body Sport England and comes on top of £220 million emergency fund for grassroots clubs in April and a variety of measures announced by the chancellor to help businesses of all sizes.

Harriett commented: “I’ve had range of requests from constituents to ask me to speak up for various sports that have been affected by forced closure during the lock down period earlier this year and I am proud at the way the Government continues to offer support to art, heritage and leisure businesses.

“I’m pleased to see that leisure centres will also be helped as part of this process as I’ve met with gym managers across the constituency to understand the challenges they are facing to stay afloat.

“This is a very difficult time of year for sports fans who can’t go and watch their club or play their favourite sport but I hope that this emergency package offers some hope to people who enjoy grassroots sports activities.”
