Harriett supports climate change action

12th June 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has offered her strong support to plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and hit a world-leading target in just 30 years.

The Government has laid draft legislation meaning that the country will have ‘net-zero’ emissions by 2050 – the first major country to adopt such a standard.

The legislation follows recommendations by independent advisers on climate change and is in addition to a series of important measures to protect the natural environment such as banning plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds, microbeads in cosmetics and introducing a charge for plastic carrier bags.

Harriett commented: “This draft legislation is an important step forward for both our country and our planet and is a clear confirmation that this Government plans to be the first generation to leave our natural environment in a better state than we found it.

“The Government is responding to independent advice but as a local MP I hear the calls to act every day from schoolchildren to business leaders.

“I’ve met local companies in West Worcestershire who are already embracing the challenge and identifying opportunities in making our country greener.

“As a parent and a grandparent, I share the profoundly help opinions of local people on this important issue and I have offered my full support to the Government as it embarks on this nationally important task.”
