MP calls for review on First Bus school fares

2nd April 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has called for a review following news that bus fares have been increased from April 1 affecting pupils travelling to and from school.

The MP has been contacted by angry constituents after their children faced fare hikes travelling to school this week and she has written to First Bus managing director Nigel Eggleton asking for him to review the decision.

Local parents have reported that bus fare boundaries were changed at the beginning of the month, increasing fares for students to school.

Harriett commented: “I have been contacted by angry parents who are unhappy with these fare changes and have immediately written to the bus operator to ask for more information on this decision.

“Worcestershire County Council is carrying out a review of how it subsidises some routes but I have always been reassured by the bus operator that the school and commuter routes were commercially viable.

“I am eager to get the full facts on this one, but I would be concerned if a private bus company was exploiting young people and their parents to hike bus fee income on these already-profitable routes.

“I hope that First Bus will be able to offer some clarity and where, necessary, act to preserve a fair fare for school bus users.”
