MP thanks constituents following launch of Covid ‘rebuild’ plan

12th May 2020

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has thanked local people for following the ‘Stay Home’ advice over the last seven weeks and welcomed the Government blueprint for restoring the economy.

The Government has unveiled new measures which relax some of the ‘Stay Home’ advice and will allow people to take more exercise. Household recycling centres re-opened yesterday and garden centres will be able to welcome customers from tomorrow (Weds May 13).

The proposals also plan for the partial re-opening of schools next month, as well as some small shops and the aim of opening up hospitality businesses, hairdressers and cinemas if underlying conditions allow, in July.

The Government has published the detailed 50-page report setting out the new strategy including plans to resume professional sport behind closed doors and allow people to gather in wider circles as summer approaches, should the scientific advice allow.

There is also new guidance on travelling to and from work on foot, bike and by car and only using public transport in a mask to help slow the spread of the virus.

Harriett commented: “I know my constituents will welcome the good news about gardens centres opening from Wednesday and thanks to the strict observance of the guidelines, this nasty virus is really coming under control.

“If we are vigilant and follow the science, I am confident we will be able to return to a new normal. I know that the chance to see one other family member in the open air will also be a lifeline for many – meaning that we can spend much more time in the fresh air as we move from Spring to Summer.

“The evidence is strong that the virus is not passed on as easily outdoors and we are lucky to have access to beautiful green spaces on our doorsteps.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made the effort to follow Government advice and helping to slow the spread of this virus through the county. I hope that people continue to follow advice in the coming weeks and months as we adapt to new ways of living.”
