MP welcomes cashpoint raid gang convictions

9th April 2019

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed news that an organised crime gang responsible for a raid on a Malvern supermarket has been convicted and jailed.

The gang who attacked the Malvern Vale Sainsbury’s store were sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to conspiracy to burgle and converting criminal property.

The gang, from Birmingham and Wolverhampton, stole more than £1million and caused £200,000 by smashing their way into cash machines across the country and received jail terms totalling more than 30 years.

The convictions were secured after investigations by West Mercia Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit.

Harriett was briefed on the investigation by Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion and she welcomed the convictions and praised the efforts of the local police team.

Harriett commented: “I have had a series of lengthy discussions with both the Chief Constable and the Police and Crime Commissioner regarding the instance of cash point thefts and I am glad to see one criminal gang convicted.

“We have seen a number of cash point raids in the county – each one causes alarm to the local community and a serious amount of inconvenience.

“I welcome the fact that one gang has been detected and convicted and hope that the police continue their efforts to keep our rural communities protected from organised crime.”
