Recess delays Tenbury flood defence debate

25th March 2020

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin’s debate into Tenbury’s flood defences has been delayed after the Government brought forward a proposal to start Parliament’s Easter recess early.

Following the Government’s decision to restrict daily people’s movements, MPs were urged to wrap Parliament up early than planned. The House of Commons was expected to rise for the break next Tuesday.

The House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has agreed that the debate will return to the floor of the House of Commons when it resumes sitting.

Harriett commented: “Parliament will be starting recess a few days earlier than expected to allow MPs to follow advice and isolate, just like our constituents.

“This was an important opportunity to air the plight of Tenbury residents and business owners, but I have been reassured that I will get an opportunity to bring this matter forward after the Easter recess.

“I am sure that both the Government and the Environment Agency will continue considering the longer-term solutions for Tenbury but right now all of our focus will be on dealing with the immediate issues arising from Covid-19.

“I want to reassure Tenbury people that this project retains my focus and having had detailed conversations with Government Ministers, I know they are aware how important it is to secure funding for this project.”
