Harriett Baldwin protests to Minister about Ambulance Trust consultation

22nd October 2007

Harriett Baldwin has this week written to Health Minister Ben Bradshaw to ask him to intervene in the botched West Midlands Ambulance Trust consultation.

Last week, in answer to a Parliamentary Question from Peter Luff MP, Mr. Bradshaw stated that the consultation is a matter for the Trust.

In her letter, Harriett Baldwin said: "The problem is that the Trust's consultation has been botched from the start and someone needs to hold them accountable."

There are five areas where the ambulance trust has let down the public.

1.When Herefordshire and Worcestershire were merged into the West Midlands, we were assured that the Hereford and Worcester call centre would stay open. The Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh now states that he is not bound by this assurance because he is new to his job.

2.The consultation offers only one proposal. The status quo is not an option.

3.There have been 8 alternative proposals submitted, including one supported by Harriett Baldwin, Sir Michael Spicer MP, Peter Luff MP and Bill Wiggin MP. During the consultation period, inadequate detailed financial information was released by the Trust to prepare these proposals.

4.The Trust incorrectly summarised public and institutional feedback on the proposal received during the consultation period. Two large petitions of over 18,000 signatures were classified as only two objections.

5.When the Trust did release detailed financial projections, these included staff dates on birth and salaries, in a clear breach of privacy.

Harriett Baldwin concluded her letter to the Minister with the words: "Given that this consultation has gone so badly wrong, I urge you to step in and restart the consultation process to include a wider range of options, including one which keeps sustainable local knowledge of Herefordshire and Worcestershire."
