MP backs £1 billion Covid extra help for councils

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed extra cash totaling £1 billion to help local councils continue the fight against the impact of Covid-19.

Councils have received over £6 billion this year to help with additional costs resulting from the outbreak of coronavirus. Today, the Government confirmed that Worcestershire County Council will be getting £4.3 million, Malvern Hills District Council will receive £152,000 and Wychavon District Council is awarded £250,000.

Councils will also be able to access a support fund worth £100 million to help leisure centres which have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.

Harriett commented: “Councils have taken extraordinary steps to adapt to the extra challenges they face during the global pandemic and this extra cash is further recognition of the important role they continue to play.

“I get regular briefings from all three councils in my constituency and can testify to the significant extra work they have taken on.

“As winter draws in, I am sure their role will continue to be important and this money will help to ensure that we are in the best possible place to continue the fight against this terrible virus.”
