West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has repeated her support for a new medical school, based in Worcester, which will help the local health service to recruit more doctors.
The school, which is planned for the old Berrow’s publisher’s site on Hylton Road, is currently under construction and Harriett joined county MPs writing to the Department for Health and Social Care urging them to accelerate the approval of the new teaching facility.
The backing comes as the Government lifts its cap on teaching places for people studying medicine and dentistry as more students are expected to get top grades in their A level results this month.
Together with the five other Worcestershire MPs, Harriett signed the letter, which was sent to Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid who was recently appointed Health Secretary.
Harriett said:
“The new medical school will play an important part in the growth of our local NHS and will ensure that our local hospitals have access to the best local talent.
“I have closely followed the bid and fully support Worcester University’s efforts to deliver a new medical school in the city.
“As a group of Conservative MPs representing Worcestershire, we have all backed this too and we are now fortunate to have our colleague Sajid Javid in charge of the Department of Health and Social where the decision will be considered.
“The management team at the Worcestershire Acute Trust are keen to see this plan accelerate as are the local GPs. As MPs, we have offered our backing and hope that Sajid will champion this one in his new Ministerial role.”
