Harriett Baldwin, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for West Worcestershire showed her support this week for Upton-upon-Severn's efforts to become Worcestershire's first plastic bag-free town. She visited the exhibition of alternatives to plastic which was held in Upton's Memorial Hall on Friday 11th January and Saturday 12th January and bought a handy string bag with pocket that fits neatly in her handbag. Harriett Baldwin said, "I am delighted to support this initiative - it is being done at a local level by the town, its traders and its customers, not imposed from on high by diktat. I am as guilty as anyone of using plastic bags from time to time, so I welcome the opportunity to buy an alternative. As this exhibition made clear, plastic bags are harmful to animals in the wild as they take a long time to degrade. Reusing a bag made of other materials makes sense."
