Harriett Baldwin has called on Worcestershire County Council to send teams out to Tenbury to clear the drains and culverts as heavy rain sweeps through the town. The River Teme has already experienced very high water levels this winter, and Harriett has urged the council to act immediately to prevent worse flooding caused by blocked drains. Harriett chatted to local Worcestershire County Councillor Ken Pollock to discuss the issue and he agreed to ensure that action is taken. Harriett, who is Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for West Worcestershire, was speaking with Councillor Pollock during her campaign launch in Tenbury on Saturday. Harriett said: “The latest flooding event is a stark reminder of how quickly the town can be affected by very bad weather and this has, in the past, been exacerbated by blocked drains and culverts. “It is essential that the county council and the Environment Agency work together to look at what effect the latest floods had, moving debris into risky areas, and also to ensure that the brooks are free-flowing. “Flooding has always been an issue for the town but townspeople continue to depend on individual flood protection measures to keep their properties safe. It is therefore essential that the relevant agencies do their bit to reduce the risk of flash flooding which is often at the root cause of major incidents. “I raised this issue again with the town council before an election was called and if I am re-elected on December 12, I plan to gather all relevant stakeholders together again, to see what steps can be taken to identify the right local permanent flood defences.”
