Harriett Baldwin MP has today received more detailed information about the costs and space required for Pershore’s library, following a visit to the library with Town Mayor Chris Parsons and Clerk Ann Dobbins.
The West Worcestershire MP wrote to the County Council to find out the annual running costs, the space required and the itemised list of repairs needed at the purpose-built building.
Plans are under consideration to vacate its current location with the preferred option being a move to the Civic Centre on Queen Elizabeth Drive.
The existing purpose-built building was built 35 years ago and although it won awards at the time, it has not stood the test of time. It is poorly insulated, has no disabled access to higher floors, a problematic flat roof and substandard toilets and drainage. Gas and electricity bills are over £2,000 per annum. The total cost of the repairs needed is £178,000 and the more pressing items costs £135,000. Detailed itemised estimates have been supplied.
The current building has 297 square metres of public space, but with advances in technology a smaller space is needed in the future.
Harriett commented: “It is such a shame that the purpose-built building has not stood the test of time. Everyone can see that it needs a lot of expensive work done.
“What effect would moving the library to the Civic Centre have? Would this be more or less convenient for local residents? Would trade be affected by moving the library away from the shopping area? Which location is most convenient for schools? Are there other alternative locations in Pershore for the library?
“It is important that users and potential users have their views heard. It is also important that the Town has the facts available and I hope this new information helps with that.
“Forms can be collected in the library or completed online at http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/researchweb/library/pershore_library.htm.
“I am assured that this proposal is not a done deal, so it is important that everyone speaks up to make their views known on this subject.”
