Harriett Baldwin is today celebrating after becoming the first woman to be elected to represent West Worcestershire.
Following the early-morning result announcement Harriett said she was delighted to hold on to the seat for the Conservatives having won the seat with an increased majority of 6,754 polling 27,213 votes.
Speaking at the Bank House Hotel, Bransford, where the result was announced, Harriett commented: “I am tremendously proud that the people of West Worcestershire have chosen me to represent their views in parliament and it is something that I will never forget.
“Throughout my campaign I have said that the voters were looking for a person of integrity to champion their causes and represent their best interests.
“At a time when trust in politicians has ebbed, I hope that I can steer a path to safer waters and show that I am worthy of every voter’s trust.
“There is much to do and many difficult decisions to be taken. Today we must start the task of fixing broken Britain and returning hope and prosperity to all.”
In her speech, Harriett paid tribute to retiring MP Sir Michael Spicer, thanked her hard-working team and spoke of respect for her opponents.
In a call to unify the county, she added: “Whilst this has been a sometimes tense and passionate campaign, I think it is important to recognise the efforts of all those who work to keep democracy alive, whatever their personal allegiances.”
