A project to help people who need extra help with their food shopping is celebrating this week after scooping a £2000 cash boost.

The community fridge project in Malvern Link has been awarded the cash from a community fund run by National Grid.

The project was proposed by West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin, who visited to share the good news with local county councillor Karen Hanks, who has also helped to support the fridge as well as Councillor Nathalie McVey.

The pair chatted to Reverend Phillip Johnson of Malvern Link with Cowleigh parish about the project and how it is able to help people make sure there is enough fresh food on the table as well as reducing supermarket food waste.

The fridge, sited at the Church of the Ascension at Somers Park, is also allowing local people to gather in a warm space as temperatures dip below freezing.

“Community fridges are playing an important role helping people to make sure they have access to fresh food and I chatted to Reverend Phillip Johnson about how the project is operating with rising prices and high energy bills.

“Phillip has championed a number of vital projects helping his local community and I was delighted to be able to nominate this one for a cash award from National Grid.

“He is looking to expand the offer by working with more local retailers and food producers. Malvern’s voluntary sector is incredibly generous and I am glad that the community is pulling together to help their follow residents in their time of need.”

Reverend Phillip Johnson added:

“We’re extremely grateful for this support once more from Harriett. It will make a real difference for people living in Malvern Link and we’re delighted that we were recommended for this award”.
