West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has today welcomed a further £2.4 million in local strategic growth funding to extend the superfast broadband network across the county.
The new cash will help extend the network meaning that 95 per cent of homes and businesses can access the internet over fibre-optic connections.
The Superfast Worcestershire project will upgrade 90 per cent of the county’s internet infrastructure and Harriett has asked Culture Secretary and MP for Bromsgrove Sajid Javid MP to ask BT to publish which cabinets will be excluded in the current roll-out plans.
BT has consistently refused to share the data, citing commercial confidentiality, despite receiving more than £11 million of taxpayers’ money to enhance the fibre optic cable network.
Harriett discussed the matter with the Secretary of State after Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership was granted a further £2.4 million to extend the reach of the superfast broadband network and he promised to ask BT to handover the roll-out plans.
Harriett commented: “The project to extend the superfast broadband network is will bring faster connections to 90 per cent of the county’s homes and businesses.
“However, some rural areas will be excluded by this scheme and I have asked both BT and the county council to share this data so we can make alternative plans to help these communities get access to better broadband.
“It’s great news that the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership is one of only six in the country to get cash to improve broadband connectivity and they also now urgently need to know which areas are slated for missing out on a cabinet upgrade so they can make other arrangements.
“I am pleased the Secretary of State has offered to intervene and I hope that soon we will have better transparency on the BT plans and help us to find a workable solution for those excluded by the Superfast Worcestershire upgrade.”
