West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has praised police who have carried out a number of arrests following a spate of catalytic converter thefts across the county.
Operation Urban was launched earlier this year to try and stamp out the rising number of thefts of catalytic converters which contain precious metals such as palladium. It is feared that organised gangs are targeting rural areas to steal the parts to sell for scrap.
Six people have been arrested so far and this week a car with 34 catalytic converters was intercepted by police leading to further arrests.
Harriett commented: “I want to praise the efforts of police locally who have worked hard to stamp out this crime.
“Catalytic converter theft has spiked over recent months and this swift action will hopefully drive the criminals away from the area.
“It is still important to remain vigilant and if you own a 4x4 vehicle, I would encourage you to get it marked.”
Inspector Steph Brighton, who leads the Malvern Hills Safer Neighbourhood Teams, said: “It would appear we have seen success through the combination of increased and focused police resources and passing on crime prevention messages to the public through the media, social media and at events.
“However, we know our efforts have to continue to ensure the thieves do not return. We will always rely on the public to take steps to protect their property and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
“I’d like to thank the public for their willingness to engage with the problem and take steps to protect their vehicles - I am sure their efforts have contributed to this fall in crime.”
