West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has today welcomed news that a long overdue BT broadband upgrade is close to completion.
The MP met with local electricity supplier Western Power Distribution to ensure that the final hurdles were handled before finish the upgrades to Malvern town and West Malvern.
Harriett has been a long-time campaigner for faster broadband to the town and arranged the meeting with Western Power Distribution following questions from local constituents.
Electricity is due to be supplied to broadband cabinets in Malvern town and Westminster Bank, in West Malvern, early next month.
The Westminster Bank cabinet has been the subject of a long campaign led by the MP to secure the upgrade, involving holding meetings with senior BT directors, Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Hills Conservators.
The two cabinet switch-ons will be confirmed by Western Power next week.
Harriett said: “I was delighted to hear that there is finally some progress in West Malvern and I know that local people will join me in celebrating this switch-on when it finally occurs.
“I would like to thank Western Power Distribution for giving me a full and open briefing on the work they are doing in the constituency and look forward to working with them as they roll out the BDUK upgrade across the county.
“It is more than a year since I first met with local planners and Conservators to get permission to site these new cabinets and it has been a very long time since we secured local support for this work.
“I hope that local people will sign up to get connected and enjoy a vastly improved broadband connection over the coming weeks and months.
“I will continue to monitor BT’s work here and the work of it’s sub-contractors and hope that these delays are a thing of the past as we deliver superfast broadband to the rest of the county.”
