West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has had urgent discussions with the police after she received complaints about an illegal encampment on Abbey Park in Pershore.
The MP was contacted by angry residents sharing their concerns about a large number of caravans parked at the public park in the centre of the town. Local people have reported instances of threatening behaviour to residents, excessive noise and petty theft.
Harriett raised the matter with Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion who confirmed he plans to carry out an investigation into the issue.
A court order has been obtained by Wychavon District Council to clear the site and bailiffs and police will work together to enforce the order.
Harriett said:
“I have been contacted by angry residents who are concerned about this illegal encampment and I welcome the swift action of the district council to try and get the site cleared.
“There are clear powers to ensure that illegal encampments are moved on but I am troubled by the reports that local people have been threatened as well as the damage and mess resulting from this incident.
“I welcome the action of Wychavon District Council and I have asked John Campion to look into this to assess what steps the police can take to identify any crimes, take appropriate action and prevent further issues.”
