West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has expressed her support for the new University of Worcester Arena after a visit to the new £15m facility. University vice chancellor, Professor David Green, welcomed Mrs Baldwin to the venue on the eve of a women's wheelchair basketball game between Great Britain and Canada. The Arena is the first indoor sports facility in the Country designed specifically to accommodate disabled and able-bodied athletes and was one of only six national projects to receive funding from Sport England’s Iconic Facilities Olympic legacy fund, with a grant of £1.5m. Harriett toured the Arena with Mick Donovan, Head of the University’s Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, and players competing in the match. Mrs Baldwin said: “I am stunned by the quality of this new facility in Worcester. It will make the City a real centre for sports like basketball, netball and wheelchair basketball not just nationally, but at an international level. The University of Worcester Arena is an enormous asset for the city, the county and the country.” Professor Green said: “We were delighted to welcome Harriett at the University of Worcester Arena and to introduce her to a number of the talented athletes who are already benefiting from this innovative facility.”
