West Worcesteshire MP Harriett Baldwin has today offered her support to help promote a nationwide survey of mobile phone signals which will lead to an accurate map of mobile coverage.
And the MP is urging local people to download a mobile phone application which tests both mobile and internet connections to feed into a national database.
The campaign is being run by the Countryside Alliance to try and get a better picture of coverage, concentrating on rural areas. The pressure group aims to publish a map showing real data on mobile signal strength.
The application also measures broadband speeds when connecting to a wifi network, so the survey will produce a crucial overview of connectivity in rural areas.
Mobile phone users can download the free application, created by Root Metrics, and use it to report back signal strength wherever they are. The application can be found on iTunes and Google Play.
Harriett commented: “Many people in rural areas depend on mobile phones and often don’t know how good or bad the coverage is until it is too late.
“I am an O2 customer, and as I travel around my constituency, I sometimes find I am without a signal and the Government has pledged £150 million to improve the network. Other providers have similar patches of weak or non-existent signals.
“I would urge as many people as possible to download and use this application and feedback the information so we can help make a case for proper investment for rural Worcestershire.”
