West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has today welcomed a deal that will see BT upgrade much of the county broadband network. A contract signed between BT and Worcestershire County Council will give the company more than £11 million to extend the county's superfast fibre optic cable connections. The Government’s BDUK project has handed over £3.3m to enhance the county’s rural broadband network and the county council added a further £8.5 million to the project in November 2011. Harriett has been a long-time campaigner for proper connection for the rural towns and villages in her West Worcestershire constituency and has met with successive Culture Secretaries and senior BT directors to push for a swift resolution of this issue. Harriett commented: “I am pleased that we now know BT will be the company to carry out this long-awaited project to upgrade our broadband network. I have been lobbying for this important infrastructure project since I was elected and it is good to see some progress. “Like many people, I am particularly keen to see the detailed plan and see when areas will get upgraded and ensure BT sticks to its promises. “I am also eager to see which parts are the county fall into the so-called ‘final ten per cent’ and won't be covered by this plan and to find out what solutions we can offered them to keep them up-to-speed with the rest of the county.”
