West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed the completion of the flood alleviation road scheme which has been constructed on the edge of Upton-upon-Severn. The Ryall Road past Upton’s marina has been raised to help ensure the link road stays open in times of serious flooding. It is part of a £4 million flood alleviation project managed by the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership. The scheme was started in September 2017 and was paused last summer to minimise disruption to the town’s major tourist events. Harriett pressed for the scheme following serious flooding in 2014 when the then Prime Minister David Cameron visited the town and saw the army helping to ferry people across the seriously flooded road. Harriett commented: “This has been a huge road project and local people have shown immense patience with the traffic control measures which have been in place for nearly two years. “Anyone who drives along the road can’t help but be impressed with the way the road now looks and we all hope that this road is no longer affected by very bad flooding – keeping Upton open for business. “I want to congratulate the LEP and Worcestershire County Council, who have managed this project. This is yet more significant financial investment in the town to help it to be more flood-resilient during bad weather. “My focus is now on the next piece of the jigsaw, namely improvements to the A38 junction, helping traffic to flow more easily into the town from the M5 and towards Worcester or Pershore.” Minister for Local Growth, Jake Berry, added: “We’re committed to boosting economic growth across the Midlands Engine and the whole of the UK and building a Britain fit for the future. “I’m delighted that £4 million from the Local Growth Fund has been invested in this vital flood alleviation programme, which will minimise road closures in the future and ensure Worcestershire remains open for business.”
