West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed a national fund which will help rural communities to connect to superfast broadband. Much of the county will benefit from a project being run by Worcestershire County Council to connect nine out of ten homes and businesses to the high speed network. Culture Secretary Maria Miller has written to Harriett outlining plans to allocate a further £250 million for projects to upgrade the final ten per cent which will not be covered by current roll-out plans. Harriett commented: “I met with the Culture Secretary earlier this year to lobby directly for this extra fund to be allocated to ensure all of our rural communities benefit from superfast broadband. “It is essential that all my constituents get access to superfast broadband as quickly as possible.” Work to complete BT’s commercial upgrade in Malvern has hit a hurdle this week with engineers encountering obstacles connecting the new cabinet in West Malvern. Harriett added: “The commercial upgrade is proving to be a complex piece of work and there is much to be learned as we embark upon the county-wide project to bring fast broadband to rural areas of Worcestershire. “The people of West Malvern have waited a long time for superfast broadband and I am assured that the final connections are due imminently.”
