Harriett Baldwin MP has today given her welcome to a plan which will see BT upgrade much of the county broadband network to fibre.
The roll-out was unveiled by Worcestershire County Council leader Adrian Hardman and BT director Bill Murphy at an event at Sixways today (January 27).
The work will be carried out in eight phases and will be completed by June 2016. Every county resident will be able to access speeds of 2 mbps and 90 per cent will be able to get superfast cable connections.
The first phase of the rollout will upgrade areas including Malvern’s Enigma Business Park, Hallow and Ashton-under-hill in September 2014.
Harriett has been a long-time campaigner for proper connection for the rural towns and villages in her West Worcestershire constituency and has met with successive Culture Secretaries and senior BT directors to push for a swift resolution of this issue.
Harriett commented: “I know my constituents are eagerly awaiting this superfast fibre rollout and it will help the rural economy make the most of 21st Century technology.
“BT have nearly completed the commercial rollout in Malvern and Pershore, and this timetable will begin to add in the villages and business parks that need taxpayer subsidy.
"For the final ten per cent of homes and businesses, other solutions like satellite and village WiFi can also benefit from grants and I urge everyone to register their interest at the new website at www.superfastworcestershire.com and make sure they give their own feedback. There are good local examples like the Teme Valley, Little Witley, Overbury and Martley to emulate.”
