West Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has welcomed police action which wills see spot checks being carried out on a busy Malvern road.
The Safer Roads Partnership, which is responsible for enforcing speeding issues, has confirmed that it will be carrying our enforcement along Barnards Green Road between the shopping centre and Great Malvern.
Dame Harriett was asked to intervene on behalf of Malvern St James school’s head teacher Gareth Lloyd following reports of near misses involving speeding drivers and pupils.
Initial checks confirmed that speeding is an issue along the road and the police will now step in to carry out spot checks and enforcement where required.
Dame Harriett said:
“This is not the first time that I have asked the authorities to look into a speeding issue, particularly where it is near to a school, and it is clear from the initial findings that speeding is an issue.
“I am grateful for the school for bringing it to my attention and then the swift intervention of the Safer Roads Partnership team to assess the matter and ledge to act.
“Speeding is an issue across West Worcestershire and it is one of the more common items in my postbag. I hope that this action will both deter speeding but also be followed up by Worcestershire County Council to make sure the road is permanently safer for road users and pedestrians.”
