School children in Hallow will be able to cross the road safely going to and from school after West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin won a permanent crossing for the village.
The MP met with staff and parents at Hallow Primary School earlier in the summer, to talk about the dangers of crossing the busy main road at the start and end of the school day.
Harriett, who is an associate governor at the school, collected names for a petition and met with Worcestershire County Council to call for a safe crossing in the village.
Constituents have been raising the issues of speeding in Hallow for several years and there have been long-standing concerns about the risks to pedestrians crossing the road to reach the school the local pub and shops.
This week, Councillor Alan Amos confirmed that a zebra crossing will be built in October meaning that pupils, parents and staff will have a safe place to cross as the nights draw in.
Harriett said: “This is wonderful news for Hallow residents and I know that the news will be warmly welcomed by everyone who took the time to contact me about this issue.
“The main road through Hallow can be very busy and I am really pleased that the county council looked hard at this issue and agreed to act quickly.
“I was also pleased to see a new pedestrian crossing constructed outside Pershore High School but this does highlight the issue that some roads near school are very busy and children do sometimes need extra assistance to cross safely.
“There are currently vacancies for school crossing patrol people and they perform a valuable service where a permanent crossing is either impractical or too expensive.”
