West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin this week urged local people to be vigilant to help prevent the spread of a virus killing new-born lambs.
The Schmallenberg Virus has already been reported in the south of England and local farmers are keeping watch in case it spreads to local flocks.
The virus leaves new-born lambs with life-threatening deformities and many are still-born.
Farming Minister Jim Paice last week wrote to Harriett briefing her on the spread of the virus which originated on continental Europe and for which there is currently no vaccine.
Harriett met with farmers and National Farmers’ Union representatives and discussed the threat of the virus in the county.
Harriett commented: “At the moment the threat of the virus reaching our local farms is remote but I am sure that farmers will be taking extra precautions just in case.
“I am assured that the risks are minimal but I would urged all people – especially those walking across farmland – to be vigilant and to ensure that our flocks stay virus-free.
“This seems to be a terrible disease and it must be heart-breaking for affected farmers. I hope that our experts will work fast to find a vaccine soon.”
