West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has today called on the major mobile phone operators to boost their signals across Upton-upon-Severn and remove serious blackspots. The MP has written to each of the companies asking for them to report back on plans to improve services to the town following complaints from townspeople and businesses. Last year, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport allocated £5 billion to improve rural phone signals and Harriett has also written to Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey asking him to intervene. Harriett commented: “Mobile phone signals in Upton have been dreadful for many years and I was recently contacted by townspeople to see what can be done to lobby the phone companies. “Over the course of the last couple of years I have met with a couple of the operators in London but they seem reluctant to come to Upton and see the problems for themselves. “I have therefore written to each of the company’s chief executives to ask them to look into this matter. “The service is simply not good enough and I have also asked the Minister to investigate and see what steps can be taken to give local people access to a better signal for local people and businesses. “There has been some progress across my constituency and I have seen some improvements including the arrival of 4G in some areas. “However, the centre of Upton is still poor and I would like to see at least one of the mobile phone operators step up and help to fix this issue.”
