West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed news that the M5 roadworks are expected to be finished in time for the Easter holidays. The first section of the motorway between the M42 junction and Droitwich will open on April 12 with the final section of the motorway to junction 6 at Sixways will open in mid-June. Harriett met with the Highways England team responsible for delivering the new smart motorway project to discuss some of her concerns about the project. County commuters have faced many years of delays while the central reservation barriers were replaced and then a smart motorway conversion was carried out. The MP also questioned the impact of the new traffic lights at the Droitwich junction and has been promised a review into the impact of this improvement work. Harriett commented: “I am firmly behind any scheme which improves traffic flow for commuters and as someone who uses this stretch of motorway very regularly, I will be watching carefully to see the impact it has on journey times and congestion. “However, I did make the point that drivers have been seriously impacted both by the work itself and the higher-than-usual number of incidents and delays owing to poor layout and marking during the roadworks. “Many people have written to me voicing their individual concerns and I hope Highways England will take note of the feedback we have shared. “I have also made the point that drivers in Worcestershire have faced roadworks on the M5 for many years and I hope that once the work is finally complete at junction 6, we will all enjoy a sustained period of cone-free travel along the county motorways.”
