West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has welcomed news that the local NHS is getting nearly £4 million to improve breast cancer screening. The announcement is part of a £1 billion national investment programme to improve services for patients and comes on top of the extra £20.5 billion of extra funding for the NHS over the next five years. Harriett has campaigned for the protection of the mobile screening unit which is an important resource to help early detection of breast cancer. The Prime Minister took time in the weekly question session in the House of Commons to encourage more women to undergo a regular cervical smear test to detect and treat cancer earlier. Harriett commented: “We have an excellent new breast unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as well as an impressive new oncology unit so there are already great facilities to help detect and treat people with cancer. “I look forward to seeing the detail on how this money will be spent but I am sure it will help more people to detect and survive cancer. By taking advantage of regular screening services, more women can take their own steps towards identifying the signs of cancer early and getting the best treatment.”
