West Worcestershire MP, Harriett Baldwin has called for urgent action to identify the cause of smelly drains in the centre of Tenbury Wells.

Harriett has called on Worcestershire County Council and Severn Trent to work together on a plan to monitor and fix the smelly drains which are a regular blight on Teme Street.

Harriett has raised the matter with the chief executives of both organisations and although both have promised action, the drains remain unpleasantly smelly.

Harriett discussed the matter with district councillor Bridget Thomas, county councillor David Chambers and Tenbury town clerk Lesley Bruton and agreed to write on behalf of the town to the regulator for a formal investigation.

Harriett said:

“The state of the drains is a huge concern for local people and whenever I visit the town, it is frustrating to keep experiencing these unpleasant smells.

“I’ve raised it with both relevant organisations but we don’t seem to be making any progress so I agreed to contact Ofwat – the national regulator – to ask for assistance.

“It is a huge frustration for local traders, it must be off-putting for people walking along the street and I have heard complaints about it from people standing outside the Regal.

“As we try to encourage more people back onto the high streets, it is essential that Worcestershire County Council and Severn Trent look on this as a top priority and get to the bottom of this unpleasantness.”
