West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin told Upton’s school children that they ‘are part of the town’s history’ after burying a time capsule in the new flood defences.
The MP was talking to Upton Primary School children at a ceremony to leave a message to the future.
The school helped select items to go in the capsule which will be sealed and placed in a secret location within the defences.
Harriett told the children: “You all study history at school and I am proud to tell you that you are all part of the town’s history now.
“By leaving these messages you are telling future generations about what life is like in Upton today.
“I hope that one day, you will sit having a drink at the King’s Head and remembering how you played a part in the town’s history today.”
A map will be created showing the exact location of the capsule but it is hoped that the container will not be uncovered for 95 years – the anniversary of the 2007 floods.
Harriett added: “I was honoured to be part of this ceremony and put my own note into the capsule as well as a copy of this year’s budget.
“We will be passing on a message to future generations about the things we are learning in 21st century Britain.
“Hopefully some of the children today may be alive to see it dug up in the next century. I am sure the world will be a very different place, but Upton will still have its timeless charm.”
