Harriett Baldwin this week lent her support to a campaign aiming to create a worldwide ceasefire on September 21, 2012.
The West Worcestershire MP joined Hollywood actor Jude Law at the presentation at the House of Commons to raise the profile of the campaign backed by the United Nations.
The campaign – Peace One Day – was founded by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley and the event was hosted by nearby Stratford-upon-Avon MP Nadhim Zahawi.
The campaign will be promoted worldwide and this year will be helped by three major music-led events in London later this year.
Harriett said: “My nearby MP Nadhim Zahawi introduced me to this cause and I am happy to offer my support to this important issue. If schools in West Worcestershire would like to get invloved I would be delighted to help.”
Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley said today: “The event was a very special moment for Peace One Day. To have Harriett’s support in taking the message of Peace Day to the people of West Worcestershire is incredibly exciting.
“Peace Day is a day of ceasefire and non-violence; it applies to violence in our homes, our schools and local communities as much as it does to violence in areas of conflict.
“Peace Day provides a focus for their efforts towards a more peaceful and sustainable world.”
Peace One Day ambassador Jude Law said: “I’ve been closely involved with Peace One Day for over four years. I travelled to Afghanistan with Jeremy to let as many people as possible know that the day exists and to invite everyone in the region to honour the day.”
