Speaking in the House of Commons, Harriett Baldwin calls for a debate on child poverty, in particular the incentives in the Welfare Reform Bill to get parents into work and therefore lift their households out of poverty. Harriett Baldwin (West Worcestershire) (Con): May we have a debate on the causes of child poverty? Members on both sides of the House are concerned that it costs 50p for every pound that the Child Support Agency is able to get to children, and that the arrears are £3.8 billion. We could also talk about the provision in the Welfare Reform Bill that gives parents much greater incentive to work and therefore lift their households out of poverty, including their children. Sir George Young: My hon. Friend is right: children growing up in households where a generation or more has not worked is a real issue. I think I am right in saying that the Work programme is the UK’s single biggest employment support programme. I hope it will help to end the cycle of worklessness that has blighted many families, and all out-of-work benefit customers will be able to access the programme at a time that is right for them. | Hansard
