Harriett welcomes the cuts in corporation tax that were announced in June as basic economics suggests lower tax rates for business can lead to higher tax revenues from business.

Speaking during a Commons debate on welfare reform, Harriett Baldwin expresses her surprise that the Leader of the Opposition would like to restore child benefit to those earning higher salaries.

However, she supports the view that the current Civil Service Compensation Scheme - where some long serving civil servants are entitled to up to six years salary - is inappropriate when the average private sector redundancy payment is £9,000.

Harriett Baldwin calls for more family-friendly working hours and also points out that if the House started sitting earlier it would allow less time for statements to be leaked to the press before being presented to MPs!

During a debate following the Government statement on the establishment of the Office of Tax Simplification, Harriett asks if the initial appointments to lead the office for one year allows sufficient time to enable them to read the 11,000 pages of tax code.
